Moss grows on the weathered
bench, perched overlooking the glistening, rippling water filled with pelicans
diving, fish jumping, and ospreys soaring.
An inviting moment to absorb the beauty of nature is often passed by. Busy lives and overbooked “to do“ lists keep

How do the holidays impact
your mind, body, spirit? Do you feel
chaos or contentment with holiday celebrations of parties, pageants, gift
exchanges, open houses, choral, music, and art events? Feeling the pressure of
decorating, baking, shopping, entertaining? Honoring the diversity of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ashura, Bodhi
Day, Las Posadas, or Boxing Day?

The intention of practicing loving kindness often eludes us in our pressured, hurried existence. We get caught up in our own worries, distractions, and angst…hunkering down in survival mode. However, the mere act of offering a kind word to another, checking in on someone you know who is stressed, or sending thoughts of love and good wishes will open your heart in a way that nurtures inner comfort, healing, and peace. To step away from narcissistic tendencies that keep us

One aspect of aging gracefully is assessing how you encounter life’s offerings. Are you wired to a safety net of predictability and routine or jump on the tightrope to dance across the abyss of life’s undiscovered magic? Being wired for adventure has its merits and risks…merits being the ecstasy of accomplishment and the risks being fear paralyzing you at any given moment. On a recent

Someone asked me how I came up with blog topics on my website. My blogs blossom from an encounter, a conversation, a life experience, an insight, a whisper, or a scream. I listen and share. I hope to plant seeds of curiosity, allowing the reader to gather a glimmer of insight in how the blog relates to self. As the seed cracks open, watered by a willingness to wallow within, fed by intuitive wisdom, and nurtured b

What is true abundance? Is it the external appearance of material wealth of an expensive home, car, and country club membership? Is it relationships with people who share similar life views and interests? Is it the satisfaction of having a job that pays the mortgage and fosters a lifestyle of pleasures? For some, abundance is gauged by material success and relationships with people of similar lifestyles. In reality, true abundance

"You’re shedding!” A very wise woman commented to me on Nurse’s Day, when I was doing Healing Touch on staff nurses at Wakeforest Baptist Health hospital. She shared her intuitive wisdom that my enthusiastic passion to empower others in self-healing is not just my chosen career path, it is who I am. My outer layer of choosing my words carefully, reading a person’s willingness to “go outside their comfort zone”, an

We learn alot about people in times of crisis. The winter struggles of harsh weather, international political upheaval, and economic instability feed frustration, anxiety, and uncertainty. We learn and we grow when we encounter challenges. I was recently stranded in a NYC airport after hours of delays, culminating in a flight cancellation late at night. Exhauste

Virginia Satir was a renowned author
and family psychotherapist who wrote this poem when she was working with an
angry 15yr.old teen who had questions about herself and life’s meaning.
I have learned from young people I see in counseling that their struggle to embrace their own uniqueness and authenticity is a journey we
carry through life. I share this because the words speak to us
at any age. Blessings! Denise

In preparation for 2011, I'm stepping up ...new internet service, no home phone, switch to Mac from PC, computer purge. In my file clean-out, I discovered this journal entry from 2008, last time I was really sick, thus quiet and reflective. My journey continues, perfect timing for a goal for 2011....Happy New Year! 2/24/08 Notes to my Soul….. Head - Heart conversations <

THIS CHRISTMAS...no author noted, but wise words to live by every day of the year.
Mend a quarrel.
Seek out a forgotten friend.
Write a love letter.
Share some treasures.
Give a soft answer.
Encourage youth.
Keep a promise.
Find the time.
Forgive an enemy.
Listen.
Apologize if you were wrong.
Think first of someone else.
Be kind and gentle.

Pearl: Talking with a homeless man last weekend, he commented that Thanksgiving was a “feast for the downtrodden.” He shared that Thanksgiving is one time of year when everyone focuses on blessings, even those who are struggling. I reflected on his wisdom, given that Thanksgiving is indeed a time of bounty of blessings and gratitude. Ponder: How

Why is it so hard to take time for self-care? Speaking with wellness professionals at corporations and universities, I often hear their frustrations of providing wellness/ stress management offerings only to have minimal attendance. Yet, everyone vents how stressed, frazzled and overwhelmed they are.
Cell phones, emails, computers, Facebook, twitter, and Internet traffic create countless opportunitie

Grandma died today. She passed peacefully onto the great beyond, a heavenly blissful paradise surrounded by God and angels. She was 101 years old and I dearly love her. Grandma represented everything a child could possibly wish for in a grandparent. Living in a very small town in Kansas, we made an annual trek to her home every summer for a few weeks of delightful

The beauty of autumn colors signals nature's surge to be glorious before tucking away for the winter. I make an effort to drink in the colors of fall foliage in my daily walks and be mindful of the season’s transition. I can easily get caught up in mind chatter and my “to do” list, but if I intentionally stay present and mindful. I always pulls up a pearl of insight. Today, I reflected on a tree I pass daily…I had wat

Whenever someone comes for a Healing Touch session and clamors up on the table, I ask them to name their joy. It surprises me how difficult it is for many people to come up with an answer. After all, they have come for Healing Touch to address a problem, a pain, a hurt, or an imbalance. That is their focus. I intentionally ask them not to ponder the question…simply let the first thought pop up. Oozy

Sailing into summer creates a shift from the daily grind to a dedicated awareness to embrace relaxation and leisure joys! School is out, vacations begin, and we downshift to a slower pace of life. What are your favorite summer pastimes? My first response is picnics with watermelon and corn on the cob, plunging into any body of water available ( swimming pool, creeks, lakes, rivers, ocean), stargazing on a blanket in the grass, camping with roaste

Valentine’s Day is all about expressing love… through cards, dinner reservations, gifts, and chocolates. Just think if we practiced Valentine’s Day rituals on a daily basis. Not necessarily showering those we love with chocolate (although that DOES boost the serotonin in our brain to make us feel good), gifts, and dinner, BUT rather making a concerted effort to express affirmations and love. Happy New Year !!!
“New Year’s Day: Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual” – Mark Twain
Are Mark Twain's words full of wisdom? Let's prove him wrong. Given it is always a challenge to find a treadmill at the gym in January, I see HEALTH and self-care at the top of many New Years resolutions lists. We o
